I get this question frequently. I want to start by saying I am so grateful for your interest and support in my writing journey. It truly keeps me going on the rough days. That being said, I feel like I never have a great answer for you. I usually reply with one word, “Good”. Or maybe I’ll say, “It’s busy”. I realize those answers don’t exactly give you what you want, and I’m going to work on that.

I guess it’s hard to answer because most weeks I’m all over the place with my writing. Some days, I honestly don’t know how the writing is going! Recently, one of my dear friends visited for a few days. Snuggled on the couch over coffee one morning, she asked me to tell her what’s going on with my writing. I knew she was asking because she was genuinely interested. She didn’t want a one-word answer. I took a deep breath, and I took the time to go through my projects. As she listened, and I talked, I realized just how much I have going on with my writing.

• I am mentoring a young author and helping her publish her first picture book.
• I am working on the third book in The Universal Connector series.
• I am editing two holiday children’s picture books that I have written.
• I have a completed a young adult novel, which has been professionally edited, that needs to be revised and queried.
• I am running a Women’s Inspirational Writing Contest.
• I just created and distributed 30 journals with daily prompts for a spiritual retreat.
• I am talking with two new authors about publishing their books with Enchanted Moon Press.
• I have written the first few chapters of a historical fiction book about Lake Lanier that I would like to continue.
• Later this month, I am going to be part of an author’s marketing workshop at Georgia State College.
• I am excited to be attending the Atlanta Self-Publishing Conference again in April.
• I attend monthly critique groups and author meetings.
• I am constantly researching for projects and making connections with others in the writing world.
• I manage the business side of my publishing company, working with my website developer, marketing my books, social media, newsletters, and keeping track of sales.

All of this to say, answering the general question of how the writing is going is complicated. I guess it’s like most jobs; you’re often juggling a variety of tasks or projects. Aside from my responsibilities as a writer, wife, and mother, I’m also lucky to have a full-time job as an Elementary Reading Interventionist. Thank goodness the time I dedicate to writing and publishing can be flexible. I don’t really have a set time each day to write or complete a particular task. Yes, I have deadlines. But I tend to write when the lightning strikes.

So, my vow is to be ready for your thoughtful inquiries on the writing. I may just ask you how much time you have for my answer and if you really want to get into it! And I’ll totally understand if you just want a one-word answer that it’s going well. And I want to know about you. What’s going on in your world? What are you excited about lately?
