I can’t tell you how many times people have shared with me that they have a great idea for a story. My response is always the same; “Well then, you’ve got to write it!” Now, not every idea turns into an actual book. It takes a lot of time, hard work, and creativity to publish a book. Luckily, I’m here to help you!

Here’s a simple plan for getting your story told:

1. Sit down and write your story, from start to finish, without worrying about the craft, conventions, or any of the nitty gritty. Just write.

2. While writing your story, decipher which genre you are writing in. Are you writing a memoir? A short story? Maybe you are writing a children’s picture book. Once you have identified the genre of your book, immerse yourself in comparable reads. Go to your library or local bookstore and devour as many comparable books to your own. Pay attention to formatting, flow, structure, and length. Notice what grabs you in the comps and take notes of what you want in your own book.

3. Once your story is written, share it. Find trusted beta readers and critique groups to give you valuable feedback on your story. This is also a great time for you to take a break from your story. I find it helpful to leave your story for a few weeks and come back to it with fresh eyes. During this time you may want to start joining writing groups and attending conferences and workshops to gain more knowledge about the industry.

4. Edit, edit, edit. I read and reread my manuscripts dozens, if not hundreds of times. Then, find an experienced professional editor to edit your manuscript.

5. Finally, decide how you want to share your story. Do you want to self-publish? Do you want to work with a small publishing company? I know a good one! 😉 Or do you want to pitch your idea with queries to agents, in the hopes of selling it to a major publishing house? Which is the best fit for you and your story?

This list of five steps, although condensed, is a realistic outline that new writers can use as a tool to start their writing journey. If the list excites you and you think it’s a journey you’re ready to take on, go for it! I will be cheering you on the whole way. And I’d love to hear from you. Share your questions and experiences with me. You don’t need to go about this alone. Good luck, and I hope to have your book in my hands one day!

As always, Happy Reading! Thank you for your support. I am grateful for you.
