identifying-why-you-write

So many of us feel compelled to write. Since I started sharing my own writing journey, many acquaintances have told me they want to write too. Some have dreams of publishing a book one day, but most just tell me about their ideas that feel like they need to be told passed down.

In the writing community, I have heard various reasons for wanting to write. Here are a few of the top reasons why writers write.

  1. Writing your thoughts down helps to clear your mind.
  2. You want to make an impact or change.
  3. It’s a fun way to be creative.
  4. It’s an escape from reality.
  5. You have a story to tell and it’s begging to come out and be heard.

For me, it’s usually the last one that motivates my writing. My stories demand to be heard. I often dream and remember those dreams vividly. When I wake, get dressed, pour a cup of coffee, and start my workday, I just can’t shake the stories of my dreams. I’ve tried going on with my day and pushing the dream back. But the stories are loud and want to be told. I usually break by lunchtime and at least jot an outline down. Sometimes I turn it into a full story, and sometimes I let it rest.

Whatever your WHY is, I just hope you continue to write. The world needs stories of all types. I always tell my students that reading and writing go hand-in-hand. As much as I love to write, I equally enjoy reading the stories of others. What a gift we have in books.

Until next time, Happy Reading!
