The long-existing rules of the publishing world are slowly being shattered. With more self-publishing, indie publishers, and social media outlets, the writing world is everchanging.
One of the rules that is being challenged is sticking to one type of writing. Ten years ago, if I would have asked authors at a conference what they write, I would get one track answers.
“I write picture books.”
“I write educational content.”
“I write young adult thrillers.”
I rarely heard anyone’s response combine genres.
One of the many reasons I decided to start my own publishing company is because I want to write and publish a variety of quality books. I am a writer at heart and have stories to tell readers of all ages. Helping other writers tell their stories is a big motivation too.
Tami Charles is a NYT Bestselling author. I first learned of this beautiful writer when I came across her picture book, “All Because You Matter”. It quickly became one of my favorite books to read to students. When I heard her speak at an SCBWI conference, she talked about how she isn’t just a picture book writer. She writes in all genres. She explained that readers don’t just read one genre all the time. We like a variety of topics and genres. Writers can do that too.
I guess if I, Laura Coy the author, had to pick one lane in writing, I would say I write with a moral justice theme in mind. All my stories have a lesson learned or an underdog character who comes out on top when he stays true to himself. I guess if Enchanted Moon Press had to pick a lane, it would be enchanting books with references to the moon. That’s what makes us unique.
But the beauty of today’s writing world, is that we don’t have to pick a lane. We have a wide-open road ahead of us.
Until next time, Happy Reading!
Laura Coy
